Southern Bays Tour
Views, Isolation and Cheese
Head out of Birdlings Flat along the shores of Lake Wairewa to Little River, the iconic Hilltop Hotel and down to the cheese factory at Barrys Bay, where you can sample the cheese while watching it made. Lunch at Duvauchelles, looking right back down the harbour. Head around the harbour to Wainui and offroad up to the top of the deserted Southern crater rim for magnificent views of Akaroa Harbour, the Southern Bays and Pacific Ocean. Towards the end of the road the Southern Alps and Kaitorete Spit reveal themselves more and more. Time permitting there is then a wind down into the gorgeous Tumbledown Bay, usually more seals than people frolicking in the water. Back up to the summit, and back on the seal down the hill to Little River for refreshments and a catch up on the days events.
Northern Bays Tour
Volcanic Crater Rim, Coffee & Cheese
Head out of Birdlings Flat, around the shores of Lake Wairewa (Forsyth). Turn off at Little River, get off the seal and head up and over the spectacular Port Levy saddle and down into Koukourarata (Port Levy). Follow the gravel around the headland to Pigeon Bay. Coming back up and out of Pigeon Bay to the summit road will present us with breathtaking views of Akaroa Harbour, over North Canterbury and to the seaward Kaikouras. Depending on progress and preference we can head down the stock route to Duvauchelles and Barrys Bay award winning cheese factory (where you can sample the cheeses while watching it being made); or head straight for the iconic Hilltop Hotel for a well earned beverage.
